BEACHES OF KERLA

Sharing its western border with the ArabianSea, Kerala has a 600 km long shoreline dotted with some of the finest, most charming beaches of the world, coconut groves, naturalharbours, lagoons and sheltered coves. All of it as peaceful as the rest of the land, washed by the pleasant tropical sun and as pristine as ever.

 

Alappuzha Beach:

Alappuzha Beach is a beach in the Allepey district of Kerala, India.

The beach has a small park nearby. Alappuzha Lighthouse stands near the beach which is also a curiosity for tourists.

Alappuzha Beach is Referred to as the Venice of the East by travellers from across the world, this Backwater Country is also home to diverse animal and bird life. By virtue of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of Kerala.

Cherai Beach

Cherai Beach is a beach in the Cherai village of Ernakulam district of Kerala, south India. Cherai is a part of Vypin Island.

Cherai Beach is just 30 km from Kochi, the business capital of Kerala and 30 km from Cochin International Airport. The nearby towns are North Paravur(6 km)and Kodungallur (10 km) and nearest railway station is Aluva (20 km).

The 15 km of long golden beach is very clean, shallow, and attracts swimming and sunbathing. This is one of the few places where we can see the lagoon (poyil) and ocean separated only by a few hundreds of meters. One of the main events in this beach is the tourism fest during December.

Best season to visit is all throughout the year barring the rainy season(June - October). Tourists can find beach resorts and cottages nearby the beach.

Marari Beach:

Marari Beach is a beach in Alappuzha District of Kerala, India. Barely 11 km from Alappuzha (Alleppey) town, this sleepy little village (also called Mararikulam), is an idyllic location for a vacation. Currently the only resort in the area is the 'Marari Beach Resort' belonging to CGH Earth chain of resorts, although there are a number of homestays and a new resort called Pollethai which is 1 mile south of Marari. Muthoot Leisure & Hospitality Services part of the Muthoot Group has begun construction of a 100 bedroom resort with an investment of Rs.60 Crores at Marari, this would make it the biggest resort at Marari. The resort is expected to be completed by 2011. The beach is clean and safe for swimming.

Location

Mararikulam is connected by rail and has a railway station by the same name. It is also well connected by road. NH 47 passes through S.L.Puram, which is 5 km to the east of Mararikulam. Nearest airport is Cochin International Airport.

Meenkunnu Beach:

Meenkunnu Beach, is a beach in Kannur district of Kerala, India. It is endowed with vast stretch of golden sand and coconut trees.

Location:

Meenkunnu beach is 10 km away from Kannur town and is located in Azhikode village. It is an extension of Payyambalam beach.

Name:

The name meenkunnu is a combination of two Malayalam words meen and kunnu. Meen literally means fish and kunnu a small hill.

Muzhappilangad Beach:

Muzhappilangad Beach is a drive-in beach in the state of Kerala in southwestern India. It is located parallel to National Highway 17 between Kannur and Thalassery.

There is an unpaved road winding through coconut groves leading to the beach. To get to this road, if you are driving from Tellicherry towards Kannur, take the left turn just before the first railway crossing you encounter after crossing the Moidu bridge. The beach is about 5 km long and curves in a wide area providing a good view of Kannur on the north. Local laws allow beachgoers to drive for a full 4 km directly on the sands of the beach. The beach is bordered by black rocks, which also protect it from the stronger currents of the ocean.

Approximately 100-200 m south of the beach there is a private island called Dharmadam Island (Pacha Thuruthu in Malayalam, which translates to Green Island in English). It is possible to walk to the island during low tide.

Since the late 90's, the beach has seen a steady influx of European tourists during winter.

Payyambalam Beach:

Payyambalam Beach is a beach in Kannur district of Kerala in India that attracts tourists and local people. It often finds mention in tourism related publications as a beautiful beach. It has now a garden close to it. The beach is just 2 km from Kannur town.

A sculpture Mother and Child by Kanayi Kunhiraman is an attractive feature of the beach garden. A part of the garden is specially for children.

Many movies have been shot in this location including the Maniratnam movie Alai Payuthe.The Worldspace ad featuring A.R. Rahman was also shot here.

Payambalam is the largest and most beautiful beach in Kerala

Shankumugham Beach

Shankumugham Beach is a beach in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, south India. The beach is on the western side of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) city and very near to Trivandrum International Airport.

The vast stretch of white sand and the serene atmosphere, away from the crowd in the city, provide all the ingredients for relaxation and for spending an ideal evening. There is also a “Star Fish Restaurant” with eating kiosks and open air theatre with car parking facilities. Good food can be enjoyed at the Indian Coffee House, just across the beach, which is also a vantage point for enjoying the sunset. The beach is noted for its cleanliness. The skating school here offers the coaching on skating. Adjacent to the skating school is an indoor sports complex which provides facilities for Badminton and Table Tennis. The famous Pilgrim center, the Vettucadu Church (Christ the King church), is also near Shangumukham.

The sculpture of Jalakanyaka - Mermaid by Kanayi Kunhiraman is an added attraction. This giant statue is more than 35m long. The 'Jawaharlal Nehru Park of Traffic signs for children' is situated here, which is helpful for the children to understand the traffic rules while playing in the park. The park also provides cycling facilities for small children.

The military airport of the Southern Air Command of the Indian Air Force is situated at Shangumukham.
